Difficult to tell without a model and serial number, but judging by the decals and engine hood, it is somewhere between the late '80s to early '90s---say '88 to '92

That looks really close to mine..which is a '90. I'd narrow my guess down to a late series '89 or perhaps an early series '90. Just an educated guess.

geez this really sucks. i am trying to get parts from maxrules dot com and he said the only way to get correct parts is to get a serial /model number off of it. what do you guys use to clean out the cooling system?

Re: how to tell what year

The first year for the 90 hp was 1990.
Yours has the blue coils and cd modules which were only used on the 1990 thru the 1991"c" models.
Starting with the 1991"d" models, the coils were black, and they used a switchbox instead of the cd module.
Also, mid year 1992 they switched to a square fuel pump. You have the earlier round 2 stage pump.

So your motor is between a 1990 and a 1991"c". Since the hood/cowl still has the US Marine logo on the back, and the "CFI" on the back, I would bet a steak dinner that it is a 1990 model. All parts should be the same.

Is the cooling system plugged? with what? sand?
About all you can do is flush water through the thermostat housing and the water intake tube, unless you want to disassemble the powerhead.

Re: how to tell what year

Roscoe: You got me to wondering because my so-called 1990 90hp does not correspond to your description. Got it real cheap and year wasn't an issue so I just took the sellers word that it was a 1990.

So, you got me to thinking and I went down to look for a model number. There was no aluminum plate on the lower housing BUT on the starter motor mount there was a small paper decal with the number 906A90C.

Does this mean that it is a 1990 "C" model?

Yes Frank, 1990 version c.
That appears to be the model number for your motor, if that is the original starter motor.

Number indicates it had the decals to match the Maxum boats.

What differs on your motor?
Perhaps some of the parts are not original. ?

Re: how to tell what year

Different hood decals, no CFI decal on lower pan (Cross Flow Induction--fancy name for dirt standard engine), Mixture of blue and black ignition so I can not tell what was stock.

Model number is not on the starter motor but on the block casting where the motor bolts up into. Could not see the head and exhaust cover on his engine, but both on mine are finned. Head has US Marine decal on it.

When I bought it, it was sitting in a mom and pop repair shop so I made the guy an offer he didn't refuse. All the coil primary and CD box wires were cut. I spent about 5 hours checking, tracing, and soldering. One side of one CD box does not work. Found out the other side does when I accidentally cranked the engine while holding the plug wire. What A Thrill! Better than sex---Well---Not. Same result though.

Did not like the look of the trigger magnet on the flywheel so I replaced it.(flywheel) That's the engine that was in my old atavar. Runs like a champ.
