I have an old Mercury about 5-6 HP guessing from the 70's.
Color is black and it has a one piece metal cowl.
All I have is the serial number and I need to know the year and actual HP

Serial # 1783901

Is there a way or are there other numbers some place on the motor to find HP & year?

Thanks, Bill

I have one of those (6hp) that my father bought brand new in 1964. I still use it and it runs perfectly.........

It's a 1965, if the name Comet is cast into the side of the block it's a 6HP, if it's Rocket it's a 9.8 HP

I think its the prevoius model 1965 MERC 39 ....
The front of my cowl does not have the alum piece or the little handle going up. What HP is a MERC 39 ?

Yup...as Laddies said, a single cylinder would be the 3.9hp as pictured below.

Two cylinders would be a 6hp, which looks almost identical when the cowl is on.

There is no real difference between the 3.9hp (1964 through 1968) and the 4.0hp (1970 through 1974) motors, other than a decal. Yours is a 3.9hp based on the serial number you provided.
