take a big needle nose pliers and touch the big hot leads on the starter solenoid if nothing make sure your getting enough power at one of big power lead with the volt meter. you can take jumper cables from your car and ground one to the motor somewhere and touch other to the hot lead on starter also it should spin if not replace it

If you voltmeter has a built in DVA or if you want to purchase one you will have the best setup, however you may also use a OHM meter thats probably built in your meter, it's not as precise but will work in most cases. Here's a test for the whole ign. system. I don't have a clue what wilcox is going on about.

He was probably thinking "starter" instead of "stator".

Re: how to test a stator?

the reason i want to test the stator is because the motor will shut off at about 3/4 throttle, just like you turned it off with the key, but it also has been running rough and does not want to stay running in the water but will run great on muffs. I performed a spark test and compression test every thing appeared to be up to specs. do you think it could be the stator or fuel pump related problems?

That could be a bad high speed winding going bad, to test to see if the problem is with the fuel pump which it could also be have someone pump the fuel bulb at WOT and if that stops the problem, it's the pump.

Re: how to test a stator?

Any 'beads' of water rolling around in the float bowls? Possibly laying on the bottom until fuel flow is great enough to get sucked up and plug a main jet, killing the engine, then immediately falls back to the bottom and allows the engine to re-start.

Do your carbs have a float bowl drain plug? Can you catch the fuel and inspect for water, flush each one separately squeezing the primer.

You still don't know if it is a fuel or ignition problem, both can run up RPM fine no load on the hose but fail under load.

Re: how to test a stator?

Laddies,

What is the source of the trouble shooting sheet, I need the sheet for my 1987 45 hp 4 cylinder. I have not spark to any of the plugs - I posted a detailed question a few days ago in this forum without much reply.

I have the shop manual which explains resistence tests (which I think tell me the stator is shot) but not what the DVA results should be.

Also, can you explain, or direct me to an explaination as how to do the dva (peak voltage) test?

Thanks,
Tim
