I am trying to troubleshoot why my kill switch is not working on my 1997 Evinrude 115 SPL. It has the integrated lanyard on the ignition with 6 wires. Looking at the diagrams on this forum, the "M" on the ignition switch is the kill circuit.

How would I go about troubleshooting why the engine will run without the lanyard? The key turns the engine off just fine

Because thats a mechanical switch..when lanyard is removed the switch should turn the key to off position

I think they use the lanyard to physically turn the key to the off position unlike earlier models that had a dedicated kill switch.
If so (you can check by looking at it) then it's working as it should.

Thanks for the info guys. I just wasn't aware of how the switch worked. I accidentally started it one day without it attached and just assumed that it wasn't working correctly. Tested it out today and it works just fine. Glad I asked the experts before I started trading wires apart and buying stuff.
