I was at the lake tonight, we were idling tough a no wake zone when the motor just died. I checked for spark and had none. The moior was running fine all evening, for 2 hours of skiing, then just died. I don't have a DVA adaptor for my multimeter , and was wondering if there was any tests to figure out if I have a bad powerpack that I can do without a DVA or an extra powerpack. This is on my 1988 johnson 60hp. I have allready tried disconecting the black/yellow kill wire at the powerpack, still no spark. Thank goodness for the nice people who live on the lake that fired up their deck boat and towed us to the ramp. If not for thier kindness I'd still be rowing.

thanks
Brian

Re: How to test for a bad powerpack

I also have checked the resistance of the charge coil in the stator, 571 ohms, which is what it tested when I put on the new stator a month ago. Following the troubleshooting chart from CDI I also disconected the yellow wires from the stator and checked for spark. I'm not sure what the yellow wires to the rectifier have to do with it, but I tried it anyway. I can't think of any other thing that would kill all three coils exept the powerpack.

I checked the resistance of the timer base. I got 12.2 ohms on all three wires, supposed to be 38-42ohm. Do you think this is my problem? I think it would be strange for all three to fail and have the same readings.
