how to test the water pump on 76 merc 150hp

I have a 1976 Merc 150HP, if you have read my previous post then you know that I just put a waterpump new bottom half of the motor and seals and gaskets. I had issues with the realigning of the transmission. got it to work forward/ reverse netural. everything working.
My question is how do you know that the water pump is working?? I thought that you were supposed to see water out the exhast ports of the motor??
Any Ideas??

Ok sorry all after reading the manual. I have found out that there should have been a shim in the water pump which creates a problem for me. Well im off to take the bottom of the motor back off and replace shim that we didnt have. When we bought the boat the bottom of the motor was off. So this was a learning exp.Thanks all

Shouldn't be coming from the exhaust ports. There should be a separate hole on the bottom of the engine case. I have a smaller motor, but it's on the right side when standing behind the boat. Mine wasn't pushing water through it this spring but a couple shots from the air hose loosened something up and it's working fine now.
