How to tilt motor from inside the boat?

While this concerns a 1986 40hp Evinrude, it seems the same problem would exist with any brand of outboard.
The motor is mounted on a pontoon boat and it is a real problem to tilt. Am I just weak or is there some trick I don't know that will make the lift a little easier?

Charles

Re: How to tilt motor from inside the boat?

On my rig I have a 125 horse Merc inline six, and it is not light. I have to brace my knee against the splashwell, mentally prepare myself, and just do it. I also have to simultaniously lean forward and flip the little locking thing to keep the motor up. Maybe one day I'll own power tilt/trim. On your setup, you are going to either just experiment with different techniques, or drop about $500 for an aftermarket tilt/trim setup.

Does the motor have those struts that look like shock absorbers on them? If they are in good condition, they are supposed to help make the motor easier to tilt. Mine are mostly shot, so I get to tilt the entire 350 pound motor. Good luck...

They do make a folding bar that hooks onto the top of the motors to make it easier to tilt the motor from inside the boat. Not sure where to get it but you can try any of the marine stores. The bar stands up giving you leverage to pull the motor up. I made one for my motor. Works great.

JasonJ: No struts, just dead weight. I use the same method you use.

Bill H: The assist handle sounds like it might be worth looking into.

Thanks,
Charles :)

Bubbakat:
Do a search for motor tilter on Overton's and you will find one. Just a little less than $40 and only recommended for motors up to 40hp.

www.overtons.com

Charles

You NEED one of these after you start making regular appointments with the chiropractor...due to age, etc. I have one that I use on a Merc 500 50-horse and it works great...puts leverage on your side. But then again I used to date track and field gals so they could kick start my hog for me.

You can check anyone that carries marine products, Overton's, Cabela's, Marine West, I've seen them in all the catalogs. Good excuse to order some free reading material :D :D .

Rickdb1boat:
Good link, good picture, not so great a price.
Same thing at Overton's for $37.99.
There is a very good chance that your local supplier will match Overton's price. Mine will.

Charles
