how to u get a nice smooth surface with fiberglass?

I picked up a 1979 grady white project boat. The deck lids need to be replaced. I can make new ones out of fiberglass,wood and epoxy. After there made how do i get the fiberglass smooth for painting?

Ayuh,... Sand 'em smooth....

Use 200-300 grit sandpaper on a dual action sander - don't oversand.

Why Epoxy ?

In any event..your going to sand..block or d/a or 8" soft pad with 40 on up to 120 grit..prime..resand with ( whatever your paint says to prep to ) and spray paint.

Id sand them up to 80 or 120 .. blow them with gel and wetsand and buff..

Just me..its not like a full spray job..and will be OEM..

Thanks for all the info guys. I've used epoxy on my transom replacement on our searay. I liked working with it. Plus i have like 2 gallons left over along with about 12 yards of 1708

You may want to use a lighter cloth. This is 6 oz woven:
