I read a bunch on what the ohm meter should read when testing the fuel sender, however how do i use my multimeter to test the ohms. Ex: i tried connecting the negative to the negative on the sender, and positive to the positive on the multimeter. it shows a constant 14ohms regardless of the fuel sender arm position. the fuel gauge is dead no response at all.

You should be read it with a ohm setting Rx1 or the lowest one on the meter and one probe goes to the ground terminal on the sender unit and the other goes on the insulated terminal. The units are rated in 2 ways. Ohm value effects the fuel meter needle range. The travel on the float arm is different for different tank thicknesses. You will have to look and match that up.

Since most sender units read 25-50 ohms when full and 225-250 ohms when empty, if yours is reading a constant 14 ohms, I would think the gauge needle would go to full when power is applied and back to empty when power is removed. ??? If you are not sure how to test the sender, search this site or Google "How to test boat fuel sender unit" for step by step instructions.

It can read most anything unless one end of the sender wire is disconnected. There must be no other resistive elements in series or parallel with a device on which you are trying to measure resistance. So yes -- you set the meter to read 33 - 240 ohms. You 1) disconnect the pink wire from the threaded fuel sender terminal. 2) Place place the positive meter lead on the sender terminal and the negative lead on the metal shell of the sender. Depending on where the float arm is will determine what the meter reads. 240 ohms empty, 109 ohms half full and 33 ohms full. Slight variation in the numbers is ok. Constant readings, no readings, or erratic or widly incorrect readings means you need a new sender.

To test the gauge you turn the key on, MOMENTARILY jump the "S" terminal to ground. The needle should peg full. If not, verify there is +12 volts on the "I" terminal and that ther is a good ground. The system cannot work unless there is. When installed in the tank the fuel sender shell must be grounded as well.

I didnt read this until now, but i verified that the sender is getting volts to it and the ground is good . Tried reversing the connections but still no readings on the gas gauge. so can we conclude bad sender?

VERIFY that the sender is bad by following my directions. You can also veify that the gauge is good or bad by following my directions. How did you verify that the ground is good and where is it grounded?

Re: How to use ohm meter on fuel sender

ok based off your test I was getting a fluctuation of numbers that coordinated. I purchased a honda fuel gauge and a new sender because the old sender had a hole due to corrosion. The new sender didnt work, im waiting for the new gauge to come in so ill report back.
