Re: how to use the alignment tool
Well, once I sit the engine in, I usually put the alignment bar in and adjust it up or down till the bar fits.
I do put it in as far as it will go by hand and tap sideways and up and down and around the bar with a rubber mallet to center the gimbal bearing incase it got moved, but do not drive the alighnemt bar in.
Look at the alignment bar and use grease on it so you can see the marks left by the coupler splines.
If you see very distict marks on the top of the alignment bar (now called the AB) and very little marking on the bottom, that means the coupler is hitting hard on the top of the AB and you need to let the front of the engine down to center it more.
If it is hitting on the side of the AB the hardest, then the engine is pushed to one side too much. Bump it over to center (mallet on front motor mount or what ever works)
Once centered side ways, lag bolt it to the stringer. Then work on the up and down.
NOW, if you have old rear motor mounts and they are bad (Soft or broken) you won't get it aligned till you put in new mounts.
Then after it's all aligned, turn the engine 180° and try the AB again, if it still goes in all is fine tighten the alingnment lock bolts and recheck. If it's ok, you are done.
If the alignment was off after turning the engine 180°. then the coupler is out of alignment and needs replaced.
