Hi All,

I linked this in the sticky at the top of the forum on the bottom of Franks excellent video on syncing the carbs and setting the timing, but I'm a bit newer to boats and there were a few things I wanted to see how to do that weren't in his video, so I made this to try to help out those who are a little bit newer and want to make sure their timing is set properly:

How to set timing on outboard motor - YouTube

Let me know what you think or if there is anything else you would like to see (or if I did anything incorrectly...)

Pretty good video.
Removal of the plugs will allow the motor to spin up a easier.

That's a really good point - I didn't even think to remove them - I'll put a little note into the video for others, thanks!

So this would be assumed to be 'static' timing correct, which is why you are setting to 28 instead of 30 degress?

Yes, static when cranking and dynamic when you are actually running at WOT either in the water or with a load impeller on a test tank.

Thanks, I plan to static time my engine. I assume that you should disconnect the fuel supply as well? If that's the case, does it matter if you run water to the lower unit with the hose/muffs?

No do not disconnect the fuel line although you can depending how long you will be cranking it. But you want to make sure you have enough fuel mix in the carbs to continue lubricating the cylinders while setting it up. Instead, just disconnect the plugs and ground the wires as shown in the video.

Thanks! I tried this tonight but couldn't see the marks (unpainted) between the cheap timing light and sun. I painted the marks and will try again...

Re: How-To video - Setting the timing on your Force Outboard

Why is this needed on a force motor to where it would ever get out of time?

I own a 89 Force 85, or is the timing stuff only on 92 models and higher on 125s?

I saw the painted marks and the motor timing was dead on! Thanks for this informative tutorial!

People do it to verify since most of us here bought our units from other people who might have done some work on the units and never set the timing. As for getting out of time, unless you sheared a key on the flywheel and shaft or did some work with the flywheel and triggers, it usually stays the same. But nothing is more comforting knowing your timing is where it is supposed to be.
