There are 2 types of volt meters. 1 has 2 wires and 1 has 3 wires. The one with 2 wires likely does'nt have a built in light and you connect the wires to the battery, one to the + and the other to the -. On the one with 3 wires, one of those wires will go to the pannel lights switch. The others go to the battery. Normally the switch wire is white, pos is red and neg is black or brown. If you connect directly to the battery, the meter will always read. Better to connect after the bat selector switch.
