How warm is the pisser water suppose to be?

I just hooked my old mercury 115 6 inline up on my boat. When I run it with the waterhose, the pisser starts after 10-15 secunds. However, the water is hot, and I mean HOT! I would burn my hand badly by holding it in the water. Is it suppose to be that hot?
I just changed impeller and impeller house so I know that part is ok. I was looking after the thermostat to change that also, but couldn't find it.
Any help is appreciated.

RegardsRegards
MikeMike

I'm gonna add some more information: When I let the motor run, the pisser "slows down" and don't give much water. Could all this be the thermostat messing things up?

it could be normal, how old is the water pump impeller? My yamaha's run hot also, at thermstat opening temp. There is even a warning to the effect of possible danger, and human contact. I don't remember the exact wording.

The impeller was replaced few days ago. I was just told that a mid 70's 6 inline does not have a thermostat. Now I am lost
Why is the water running fine when the motor is cold and almost stops when the motor get warm? I just can't figure out what could cause this to happen.

Re: How warm is the pisser water suppose to be?

Maybe one day I will be lucky and an expert will read my post :)

I tried starting the motor up again in a big plastic can with water. Just to make sure that my previous experience was because of too low/high water pressure. Now the pisser was only dripping (what is the real name by the way?) also when it was cold. The two square holes in the back gave plenty of water and it had a normal temparature, not over heated like yesterday.
Can someone please tell me if everything seems to be normal?
I would hate to finish installing wireharness and cables and control and everything just to know that it didnt work.

Hi thought i had a manual on that engine but i don't, check first when you put the lower unit back up into place if you have the tube that comes down from the powerhead into the top of the pump as this is hard to see sometimes when doing it your self, there was another post here for older mercs just recently and gave another site where there is another forum for older mercs, not sure but one would think there should be a thermosat........no hoses at the top of the head???........pump was in correctly??? the impellar i mean for the correct rotation? good luck and the nicer weather is on the way........one thing for sure you do want tooverheat the engine usually is the cause of complete mess..........

ooooops almost forgot that is waste water out of the telltale .so it will be hot around 160 degrees i beleive ........the rectangular ports you see water coming out of is the exhaust ports as they exhaust through the prop hub also..........

mike, that inline 6 doesnt have a thermostat...and the telltale [pisser] should never get so hot you cant hold your hand under it...at idle will be just lukewarm...I am guessing when you ran it on the flush ears that you were getting air in the water intakes causing improper cooling...the only decent way to test a cooling system is in the water [or a tank] flushing ears are good for just that..flushing. They are garbage as a diagnostic tool, just about any junk motor will make make noise like a good one on flushing ears....aside from having a partially blocked telltale hose, I dont think you have any problems...
