I thought this could be useful for fellow iboats members. Sorry it's so small but I had to stay within the forum rules for picture posting.

Sure there is. It's illistrated correctly but some people would call that a false floor I believe...?

Anyways, out west we do use the term floor. BTW, the illistration is out of a 1960 powerboat magazine.

Oh I don't know about that. Those big grey things that I rode in across the waters had a pointie end, a blunt end, an upstairs and a downstairs, beds, a kitchen, highly waxed floors, and kinds of other neat stuff. ;-)

Boats (and ships, for that matter) do not have floors. They have decks and/or soles. Pretty nice illustration otherwise, but punches one of JB's hot buttons. :)

Out west we do. In fact, we even have publications going back 40 years to prove it. lol
You're never to old to learn something guys.

We take our floors serious out here and make 'em nice and shiny.

This is a "flow coated" Balsa floor:

In boatbuilding terms...floor boards are used to make the sole, just as rope is used to make a line.

Some say "Po-TA-to" others say "Po-TAH-to" :D .

As to the question...I know my boat pretty well being that I've re-powered from an I/O to an O/B. I installed all the electronics and have rewired the entire boat. I even get lucky at times and catch fish on it ;)

Re: How well do you know your boat?

There is a big difference between wooden boat construction methods and fiberglass boat construction methods. Do you know how your boat was built? If you don't, you will never be able to understand proper nautical terminology. Take a look at Chapman (p. 80), "Misunderstanding often exists in connection with the use of the term 'floor.' A 'floor' in boat construction is one of the transverse frame members tying the lower ends of the frames together at the keel. It has nothing to do with the decking."

I cringe every time someone refers to their deck as the floor of their boat, but I'm getting used to it.

Lol...

I believe I stick to the term floor as illistrated "especially" if it takes floor boards to build it.

"All hands on floor" for a lesson in nautical terminology from Sharp Shooter. Don't pay any attention to the "cockpit deck" appearing in the uppermost illustration. Stick to your guns.
