How well should my fletcher 185 with 3.7 mercruiser go?

I've tried my boat for the second time now since i've owned it / its been rebuilt, and to be honest it's pretty rubbish! It goes ok when planing but the get up and go is poor to the point where i'm not sure it'll be any good for towing inflatables or a skier! I've borrowed different pitch props and noticed the difference but it still doesn't grunt away like my friends 21' 165hp L6 boat which will pull anything. Is this how the 470 engines are or is something wrong? As i've read they have lots of torque. Any advice would be great as i can see it going down the road in the near future otherwise! Ben

What size prop are you useing ?<br /><br />What kind of WOT rpm are you getting so we can be sure your starting out with the correct prop <br /><br />also a fletcher 185 is how big and heavy of a boat ?<br /><br />tommays

have you rebuilt the boat completely and if so did you change the outdrive, if so you may have the wrong gearing ratio...just a thought!!

the 3.7 should be awesome in your fletcher i had a 2.5 in an arrow sport a few years ago and it jumped out of the hole with ease...

Not the outdrive, just the engine. runs perfectly, just no get up and go. I'm sure something isn't right, but what? Doing a compression check tomorrow

"get up and go" has as much to do with the outdrive ratio as it does the engine.<br /><br />It's like a car- the engine could have lots of power, but you can't accelerate very well starting off in 5th gear.
