Well sir, I had one of those years ago. Today I have a newer model with the TT unit between the transom brackets and only one cylinder for both functions. The pump/motor assy has a vertically installed fill screw and full is even with the bottom of the threads. I forgot how to do it on the older engine I had.

On these hydraulic systems you need enough fluid to keep the pump's impeller in fluid when working, but you have to have room for expansion. Hydraulic/gear boxes (generically speaking) never operate completely full, usually 1/4 to 3/8 (good guess) and the rotation of the gears slings oil onto the moving parts to keep them cool and lubricated.....like the splash system in a Briggs & Stratton lawnmower with no pressurized oil system, or even an automobile/truck engine which uses splash and pressure.

Richard, If the PTT unit is mounted completely on the engine, tilt the motor all the way up with the boat level. Fill the resevoir until it overflows. Use ATF fluid. Those units are self bleeding. Run them down and then up, and let sit a few minutes to allow the air to bubble out, and then refill. Repeat as necessary.

If the PTT pump is mounted in the boat, remove the oval head ss screw on the right top of the resevoir. Stick a q-tip into the resevoir to see what color the fluid is. Red is ATF, brown is 5W-30 motor oil. Fill to top and replace screw.
