How Would You Fix This?

Hello,

Sorry for the length of this.

1989 Mercruiser Alpha1

Most of the continuity circuit parts where missing and/or disconnected.

The continuity cables that run from the very botton of the gimbal housing to the gimbal ring and trim cylinders are not there at all. The screws are stuck into both gimbal housing and ring and the cable connectors are still on them but the cable is gone. The philips heads are stripped out on the screws.

How would you replace these 2 screws?

I've spent a couple of days calling/looking everywhere locally for a heli-coil, or similar, to fit these #10-24 screws. The smallest I can find in my town seems to be 1/4"-20. Would you drill out the holes bigger&deeper to fit bigger coil? I'd also need to rebuild the continuity cables to have larger diameter connectors on the ends?

I've considered drilling them out and jb wlding in the replacement #10-24 screws but then I'd need to remove paint from the surface of the gimbal housing & ring to get a good bond with the continuity cable. Also, I can see a problem with getting the jb way up into that small hole, I need JB in a syringe.

Any other options, maybe drilling new holes alltogether. Would that be safe to do down there on those two pieces?

Just cut the heads off the screws, and redrill new holes next to the old ones.
You can get a continuity kit from your local Merc dealer with all the cables and screws in it.
The Merc PN for the kit is 99940A2

Hi Don,

I already have the kit and have been installing it. Thanks.

I counted some 17 points of contact and this engine/drive only had 6 of them connected. :(

I'm glad the new hole option is ok.

Thanks again.
