Not always the case, a small amount of water can leak in and rust up the ujoints ( ask me how I know ) the only fool proof way is to pull the drive and check.

In a severe case, you might see some water coming through the gimbal bearing. In more 'mild' situations, you will notice the water once you pull the drive. (it usually splashes all over your sneakers, so wear an old pair )

If you are getting some premature u-joint or gimbal bearing noise, maybe time to check the bellows and maybe pull the drive for a look.
