How's the hull on a Glastron SSV176 ?

I see one (84) in reasonable shape and was wondering how the hull handles with a Merc 115 out back?

Any peculiarities to these? I heard older ones were kind of piggish and bouncy.

Depends on the type of water/conditions you normally boat in. Glastrons normally have less deadrise than other similar makes, but not by a whole lot. That being said, there aren't a lot of 17' boats that are going to handle much chop without jarring the fillings loose. They just don't weigh much.

Umm, if your buying it you need to take it for a sea trail. Decide for yourself if you like how it handles.

I wish I could...BoatAngel auction but not at a steal-it price. Engine needs an impellor repair but compression is still decent as is the rest of the hull.

Generally would use on 2000-5000 acre lakes.

I have a feeling anything will be smoother than my PWC!

If you boat on lake Mendota, you may get your butt kicked.... But on a nice calm day if sure it would be a great time!

What lake do you boat on?

Welcome to iboats!

Hey Bear:

Mendo is cool, but I figure that Monona and the channel to Waubesa is where I'll spend most time. That long SNW zone comes in handy to have a cool one!

I had one. It had an Evinrude 115 V4. No power trim. It was easy on gas since it was light.
It was a good stable boat, but had a harsh ride. It is quite seaworthy for it's size.
Worst weather I was in was following seas with waves that were about the length of the boat. When I got to the bottom of the swell I'd give it a little bit of gas to raise the bow. Otherwise I thought I'd have been needing to run the pump. After I got out from between those islands I could head at more of an angle to the swells, phew!

Make sure the transom, stringers, and deck are not rotted.

Re: How's the hull on a Glastron SSV176 ?

Bidding went a bit too high for me on the Glastron...man, I did like her lines, though.

I ended up with a 1983 SS160 w/70HP as I'm sure Ezmobee will be thrilled about. Bear on the other hand won't want to anchor his shiny ride anywhere near me, though. It's weird how both boats were about the same age, yet one looked HOT and one...well let's say looks like a REAL boat.

I had to "buy my Dad's boat (70 Jupiter V)" except that I wanted an open bow. Funny thing was that he said it wouldn't hurt his feelings if I didn't take it (she's got a few dings, scratches and shows some actual use). It just proves that no matter what, even following in his footsteps, there's just no pleasing a perfectionist like him (his boat IS still like new albeit it sat and sat and sat in G'mas garage for probably 20 years and still only adds about 5 hours a year on its clock.

But I wanted to keep it simple (the 70) and light (aluminum), so even though I didn't get the sexy boat, I'm (hopefully) getting a really practical ride for the purpose intended...getting my toddler, wife and I on the water. Together! Am I my Father or??? It'll be at least a few years before we can trek on the JetSki...at least on these larger lakes.

I've seen both or your works on the other threads and it's too impressive! I've got myself a "runner" (or at least I'll find out in the next couple of days) instead of a showpiece. The floor's slightly soft in places and I did find one side of the bow seating ply rotted from a lack of air, but I'm going to go easy on fixes instead of making a restoration.

Changed the LU oil and a broken spacer by the prop nut and a new battery's getting charged up. Let's hope my tinnie doesn't drag the minivan down into the drink when I launch! And that I can crank it back up to the bowstop as she's a bit heavier than my JetSki or the SuperJets. And I have to say that my towing visibility really sucks with a real boat behind me.

Congrats! You won't find an easier to own boat than a 16' aluminum Starcraft and the 70 is pretty much the ideal engine for it. My Jupiter was a great boat but I longed for an open bow the whole time I had it so I think you'll be pleased with your decision.

Hey John,

Congratulations on the score... And as far as not wanting to anchor next to you? I'm not that way brutha! Currently I'm in the middle of a 1979 tri-hull restore, so if you need any help with deck and such, let me know... Looks like it's time for you to head to iboats dry-dock aka Restoration forum... EZ's spot on, that combo will be great!
