Want to discover why 1975 25 hp Johnson slips out of gear. How do you seperate the engine from the drive unit without disassembling to much?
Do not have drawings or manual. Would buy a manual if I could find one specific to just this motor but web offers pay without viewing first.
Anyone with experience? Will greatly appreciate response or suggestions of any kind. thanks.

Try your local library. A general service manual will cover your motor. Same lower unit design was used for a generation...
- Scott

My buddy had searched the libraries web index but said nothing there. I went and found three books. Checked them out and they look good. Is it correct to think from the reply and these books that the clutch or shifting mechanism is in the lower unit not higher up under the motor like in some engines I have seen (ref 7hp Sears Ted Williams series).

Your driveshaft spins continuously while engine is running. The clutch or clutch dog slides for and aft on the prop shaft to engage forward and reverse. It is actuated by a linkage which connects the shift handle to the clutch dog in the lower unit.
