My 16' Jupiter came with a 9.9 HP Merc. I would like to upgrade over the winter to an engine capable of pulling a skier or a tube. What range of HP should I be looking at? My boat is rated at 85 HP max. Thanks.

IMO, if you can afford it go to max rated HP

Re: HP advice

stay away from a large HP four stroke....... it will most likley weigh too much. if you limit yourself to a 70 hp you can get an nice OMC-BRP 3 cylinder motor that gives you almost your max HP, but with a lot of weight savings over any 85 hp unit you could buy!!! Yamaha makes the lightest 90 hp available...it is a 3 cylinder...but technically it is OVER 85 hp!!! most any 85 hp motor you find will weigh at least 315 lbs good luck....bob

Yep, a 70 would be ideal for that boat and would be plenty for skiing and tubing....

You can look thru some of the Jupiter resto's & see what other's are running:

Andy In NY's 70 Jupiter V COMPLETE
Starcraft project: "STOLEN" PIC UPDATE 7-31-09 COMPLETED!! - Page 1 - 325842

Rickairmedic's 70 Jupiter V
1970 Jupiter V 16' Restoration - Page 1 - 322858

StoneyCreek's 68 Jupiter
Yet Another 16' Starcraft :0) - Page 1 - 351709

V8mgbal's 63 Jupiter
1963 16 ft Starcraft Jupiter restoration - Page 1 - 424635

Ezmobee's 66 Jupiter COMPLETE
Ezmobee's 1966 Jupiter - Page 1 - 338633

InMotion's 1968 Jupiter COMPLETE
1968 Starcraft Jupiter - Rebuild - Page 1 - 524687

Start looking & grab a good running 70-85/90hp OB. As long as it's a runner & has it's controls, pretty much any in that range will serve you well. A 70hp will be plenty though.
