Re: HP / Cid ? CYL ?

the 140 and the 120 are both hp designations

some of the older GM 4cyl of that style are actually 2.5L

3.0L = 181 cid

2.5L = 155 cid

when i looked up my specs on the 91 3.0 it said 135hp 181cid so the older 140 hp must be a bit more cid, no?

no, its probably carb/ignition that accounts for the extra hp

Ayuh,... Howdy SS,...
The 3.0l motor is, 'n has always been a 181" cid motor since it's begining...
The various Hp outputs are mostly marketing, though they've used several different heads, manifolds, 'n carbs...
It's been tagged as a 130hp, 135hp, 'n of course 140hp,....
Still all the Same motor...

The most reliable way to tell the difference between the 3.0l, 'n the 2.5l, 153" cid is,...
The 3.0l has a harmonic balancer on it's snout...
The 2.5l has Just a pulley, No balancer...

The 2.5l, 153" cid motors We see in boats, should not be confused with the 2.5l used in automobiles,...
The 2.5l used in autos is the Pontiac bred motor, the Iron Duke, which is 151 cid, 'n Very different in block design...
The 2.5l, 153" cid motors have been tagged as 115hp, or 120hp, again, the same motors...

Hope this Helps,... ;)

Re: HP / Cid ? CYL ?

I checked your engine serial number, 9902420, if that last 0 is actually a C, it would make it a 1980 120 (153 cu in).

Here is a list of all the 120's with the 242 series.
