This is more of an annoyance than a problem, but my HP 3400 with AMD Athlon 64 won't restart. I have to shut it down and then restart it that way. Running Window XP with all the latest fixes, service packs etc. I run Mcaffee Virus software, Zonealarm firewall, Adware, and Spybot. I do a complete virus scan every couple of weeks so I don't think there are any viruses or malware causing this. I've searched the internet and can't find anything that pertains to my symptoms / setup. Anyone have any ideas?

??? Got me on that one! Why will it shut down so you can manually restart, but not do the "automatic" restart? Hmmm. Glitch somewhere, but can't be Bill Gates' problem. Must be your computer! LOL!

It may be the autoupdate software you downloaded to patch the system. We have 4 computers in my home office, The Athlon 64 and another Athlon do the same thing. It will eventually restart, if you leave it long enough.

Is it hanging on the shutdown part? Maybe there is a process that won't quit causing it to hang. My Athlon 64 doesn't seem to have that problem with W2000,

Hey Drrockter,

Actually, it seems to shut down normally. It just won't come back up. It sits there and the hard drive spins but nothing happens. I have to kill the power, then it boots up normally. Pain in the rass when you need to restart after an install or something.

My 64 does something similiar. Make sure you do a defrag of the system, and you can even use msconfig from the "run" window to get rid of any processes you don't want to start when you start the machine. Just be careful, you can mess stuff up if you don't know what you are doing. If you need help with this email me.
