HP Rating on a toon?

I am wondering about the rating on the pontoons, what do they consider? I have a 1979 kayot with steel toons that we rebuilt bigger. The original badge states that it is rated for a 40hp max. I have been running a 55 on it with no problems, but we have been using it alot more often and recently picked up a 115hp for it. I would like to know what, if anything, would you guys do to put the 115 on it? Attached is a pic of what the logs look like now, before we rebuilt them they were only 19" diameter, now the widest part is 26" and are 23" tall.028 (640x480).jpg

I'm amazed that that transom stays on with a 55. that is a unique float shape. You'll realy need to beef the transiome if your going to try more power. since your boat is nolonger even remotely similar to the original you should get someone that can do force caculations before supersizing it any further.

Doubt if this helps, I have 26" toons and a 115hp max. rating. Strongly suggest rebuilding / replacing that transom.

I can't say what it would max out at but I am in 100% agreement that if you are going to add power you need to completely rebuild/replace that transom, It looks like you did a good job on the tubes, go look at some 100 hp plus rated transoms and undersides and build yours up like those.

Check with agency that enforces the law on your lakes to see what consequenses, limitations, whatever else goes with exceeding the rated hp limit on the boat or about rerating the hp limit for the boat.

BTW I think that carp fishing doesn't get near enough credit for being a super way to pass the time fishing. They fight like a freight train right up to the boat. You can pop the hook out and turn them loose and catch the same one an hour later. I like to get them on MH 6 to 7 foot rods with 8 or 10 pound test, they are a blast to catch.

I don't know that you can safely do that even with a new motor pod, the crossmembers of the boat play a huge roll in the HP rating also.

If you have a 24'' spacing and light crossmembers it may not handle the bigger engine and you will end up tweeking the boat.

On our boats some have 3 crosses on a pod but the higher rated ones have 4-6 so you may need to add structure to the boat, you want to almost tripple the power the baot is rated for so it will take some work to get it to be safe and not tear up the boat.
