Hello I'm new to the forum,it's a great place!!I have a question on HP ratings. Is it the weight or the HP of the engine that gives the transom the greatest stess? Thanks in advance.

Re: HP rating!

I'd say both are definite factors. A four stroke outboard of equal horsepower to a two stroke will stress a transom more simply because it weighs considerably more. And usually...the higher the hp (2 or 4 stroke) the greater the weight.

Bottom line is...boats with BIA certification list the maximum rated horsepower. This rating is not necessarily dependant on what stress the transom can withstand, rather how safely the boat will perform under most conditions. Do not exceed this hp rating.

Walt

Howdy, KSA. I agree with Walter with one small "except". There are a few 4 strokes that weigh close to their 2 stroke competition.

You will soon be seeing ratings that include engine weight as well as hp. Check the Boston Whaler website. Every boat is rated for engine weight plus hp.

Red sky at night. . .
JB :)
