im a little confused as to how they give these boats a hp rating. heres why, i recently bought a 2003 1866 smokercraft. its a side console with a 75 merc. the rating plate on it says 65 hp max. now i have seen quite a few other boats very similar to mine on the lake with 90 hp on them. and rated at 90 hp. if you do a search on you tube for a smokercraft 1866 bass and bay. which is the closest to my boat i can find video of. they are doing a boat test with a 90hp also.

Re: hp ratings

dispalcement...
(thats a raw term. they sink your boat and see how much water it displaces, this determines the max weight and also motor weight.)

and length times beam

you can go over the max on the plate by approx 10 or 15 hp....but not recommended.

Re: hp ratings

85HP V4s and 140HP V4s "Look similar", too.

Many factors are included in rating a boat for MAX safe hp and weight. Don't try to second guess the engineers; they know what they are doing.

I disagree that you can "go over" by 10-15HP.

Being a little bit overpowered is like having a little bit of cancer. . . .something is gonna happen, you just don't know when and you are not going to like it.
