I have seen upgrade kits for Merc 40's consisting of basically a set of carbs. This particular upgrade took the 40 to a 60. I was wondering if anybody had any experience with one of these kits? I have a 50 and I am curious to see if there is anything for it. It is a older motor, three cyl., three carb. Also I have a 40 Nissan three cyl., carb that I would like to upgrade. Any idea's?

Re: HP upgrade

this is asked all the time, go to you engines parts list and see whats compatible. most are not cost effective. especally on older motors. better selling and buying newer higher hp.

Howdy Warner.

Welcome to iboats. :)

A 50% increase in power by changing carbs? I think someone was pulling your leg.

I'll bet you went to that website of a shady dealer (IMHO) that touts these so-called kits. Save your money and your motor. It isn't just carbs. I've seen the claims on their website and it's pure BS.

Re: HP upgrade

If the Merc is a relatively recent vintage, the 60 HP version has a different lower unit that carries 2.33:1 gears rather than the 1.83:1 gearing. While it is true the 40, 50, and 60 HP triples share the same displacement, only going through the parts list will you learn what actually changes between them. In the end you will find it is economically unfeasible to make those changes unless you stumble onto a stack of parts piled at the curb.
