HP Versus Number of Cylinders Opinions

I have a 1977 55 hp Evinrude 2 cyl that I think is a good combination of power, weight and simplicity when compared to 3 or 4 cyls of the same HP. The displacement is 737cc or app 45 CI. With that said I think that is about the biggest twin I would want. Any thing larger { 65hp to say 90 } should probably be a triple or possibly a 4. I recently saw a 70 hp Tohatsu that is a twin and it would seem to me that this would be a throbby shaker of an engine. <br /><br />Anybody have an experience with this motor or other large twins? My calculations have this thing displacing about 1000cc / 61 CI. 500 cc per hole is definitely a thumper.

Twenty years ago the Tohatsu 2-cylinder 70 was a great design. Lots of power and low weight and it ran as smooth as most anything else made at the time. But, things have changed. Today people are a lot more concerned with vibration then they used to be. By todays standards.....you could shake up a gallon of paint with it.

Yep, what Elvin said.<br /><br />Generally, the more cylinders the smoother, particularly at low rpm, but usually more thirsty.<br /><br />Exceptions are the classic OMC little twins of 3 to 8hp. Smooth as a sewing machine and sippers of fuel. Little singles are rattletraps by comparison and often more thirsty.
