hub axle washer question

My trailer has 4 on 4 hubs with a 4" measurement when measuring diagonally across the centers of the studs. It appears to be a BT8 type axle but I am uncertain of what all determines this classification. The axle itself is square and the only round portion is the spindle area.

I noticed when looking at one brand of BT8 axle spindles that it had a large washer on the interior of the spindle next to where the grease seal on the hub is located. However when I took my hub off the passenger side of the trailer there was no large washer.

How do I know if this trailer hub requires that washer or not? There are no markings whatsoever on the hub and am pretty certain the bearings are NTN 4T- L 44643.

Only way would be to install a washer and see if the castle nut goes on far enough for the cotter pin to drop in. If not, then no washer. Rule of thumb, they all get a washer.

+1, a washer at that location would defeat the purpose of the rear seal. It would rub against the metal part of the seal which would be a bad idea.

Did the axle also have a castle nut? Yes - then the washer was on the spindle so it wouldn't get lost. It goes between the outer bearing and nut. If it was this one, the washer in that location would not allow you fully seat the hub.

That makes sense! Mine did have a castle nut like the one in the picture. I will investigate further on this but will keep what you have shared in mind when proceeding. I did wonder if the washer location where it appears in the picture I saw online as well as your picture would cause problems with the hub seating properly as you mentioned. This info was a big help!. Many thanks!

The washer location is just where it ended up. Ya gotta take it off the spindle before sliding the hub on, then put it between the nut and bearing.
