This may sound like a silly question, but my hull drain plug looks like it chould be connected to something on the inside of the hull so when it is removed it should hang there in place as to not lose it. I can't seem to figure out what the clip should clip to inside the bottom of the hull. Anyone got any ideas/pics of what the drain plug connects to? Thanks.

And get the one that you have to twist the little T handle rather than the one with the hole in it for your finger that flips down.

Do you have the quick drain system? The plug is probably connected to the oil drain hose.

Don't want to high jack the thread but is it okay to use teflon dope tape on the plug? I use it all the time when I do plumbing work.

I do have the quick drain system, and come to think of it there is a metal clip on the end of the oil drain hose. However when I got my boat the oil drain hose was clipped to a high 3point on the engine rather than down low. Should I keep this up high or clip it to the drain plug?

The oil drain line should just be sitting in the bottom of the bilge and the drain plug cable attaches to it. That way you can just use the plug to pull the drain line out the hull drain.

FWIW if you have to travel with the plug out like we do in MN, you can slip the cable between the 2 trim lines and it holds the plug in place nicely for traveling.

The choice was left up to the boat owner...most of us attached it to the drain plug (garboard) and pull the drain hose out the transom for oil changes. Others use a pump that attaches to the end of the quick drain hose and leave the hose attached somewhere elevated in the bilge compartment.

Happy boating!

That's good to know. I think I will connect it to the 'garboard' drain plug. Gravity would seem more reliable than any pump!

Thanks.
