how do you repair hull hook? i have the floor out of my boat and the stringers are perty solid. i have the boat lifted off the trailer a little bit with a string line running the lenght of the keel. i had about a 1/2 inch gap between the string and the keel, i added alot of weight ( 4 batterys, 3 cinder blocks and a 15 lb. anchor ) and it closed the gap to about an 1/8 of an inch.

If you can move the gap by adding weight, then something isn't as strong as it used to be, most likely your stringer system. If it takes that kind of weight to move it 1/8th inch, then you aren't going to be able to determine if you have a stringer issue just by looking at it.

what would you suggest i do to fix it? should i tear the old stringers out, get the hull where i need it and then glass new ones back in?

That would be the best way to get rid of it. Some hulls have a bit of a hook built into them from the factory, I'm not saying your's did though.

Most of the time it's either from an under built hull, or a bad fitting trailer, sometimes it's a combination of the two and then being left outside to fill with water.

should i replace the middle stringer only? i already have the floor cut out. will the hull be flexible enough to work with with it out?

How do you check for it though i have my boat with no stringers and had no transom for a whyle on the roller trailer. I have made so manny measurements every time that i work on it every time i work on it, but i am worried that the hull might hook. How do you tell? I was thinking about flipping my hull upside down at some poing but im not sure if i should do it with the stringers in or before. As far as i can tell nothing has mooved. Ive measured the width of the top in every spot and there has been no change.

you need to jack the boat up off the trailer a little bit. run a string line from the back to the front along the keel. i will try to draw you a pic.

Some hulls are very flexible and some aren't, but without the stringers you should be able to line it back up.

To see if it's lined up, use a long straight edge or a string line, the hull needs to be supported at the stern right under the transom, not ahead of it. You can also support the chines and another support under the bow, right on the keel. Any pressure on large flat areas can cause it to deform.

Check in more spots than just the keel, you may need to remove the other stringers to get it lined up.

Re: hull hook repair?

without removing the other stringers the only thing that will happen is youll push the nose up and in...then the sides will bow out....then the cap wont fit.

pull the strings....weight the center of the craft....straighten the hook...replace the outer strings.....transfer the weight a little further to the sides...(keeping the planing surface true) and replace the center string.

or....build up a ton of glass on the bottom.......(tough to do...and adds weight)

i got the middle stringer cut out and added weight and got it back to where i need it! i made a new stringer and its ready to be put in.

if i put the weight on it then glass in the new stringer ( with some screws also ) and let the glass harden a few days, will it stay when i take the weight off?

depends on the glass layup....but is most cases...yes.....

look at the layup shedu;e for my stringers just posted on hull extension...

is the hook fixed? what do the stringlines say bud?

you might want to keep the weight in till all three strings are glassed...

Re: hull hook repair?

You may want to take a 2x8 plane down one side so it's true, then screw it down to the bottom fo the hull, glass in your stringer's and presto...;)

Just a thought, your milage may vary..:D

have a look at the hull extension thread......when the mold dropped...out came the 2x4s....screwed them right to the hull.....8 of em.and then screwed the big 2x12s to the bottom......

but chect those stringlines...they will tell you everything.
