I recently purchased a 15 foot Checkmate that came with no paperwork at all. After doing some research, I have to appear in court in order to take ownership of the boat. Any thoughts on that???
Secondly, the Hull Identification Number (H.I.D.) is on the transom. How can knowing the H.I.N. help me???

If you have to appear in Court for this vessel I would suggest you want that number so that you can provide it to the Judge. All Court documents awarding that vessel to you should contain that number so you have no problem getting licensee and numbers, title, trailer, etc.

Take a piece of paper and a pencil.Hold the paper over the number and rub the pencil across it so the number imprints to the paper.
Then take a couple pictures of the boat and a close up of the number.
Take that with you to court plus any pictures of the registration number on the side of the boat if it has any.

The HIN and the HID are the same thing...

Why do you have to go in front of a judge to get vessel documentation? Just curious...
