Hull ID date vs model year?

OK, I just acquired a new (to me) toy:

Now the Hull ID says it was certified in Dec of 83 (the last number of the ID are 1283). Then again...how many digits are in the numeral portion of the ID? Maybe it was made in February of 83????

I should add: it begins with STRL ...perhaps the L is for the 12th month of manufacture?

The Evinrude is an 1984, but I don't know for sure that it was original as there were clamp marks which are now replaced by through-bolts with the tilt/trim bracket.

My question is whether boats are like cars where the manufacture date is often before the model year? IE is my made-in-83 an 83 or possibly an 84?

My SC is a '73, put in service in 74. Looking at the HIN I would state that in 73 there is no relevance (at least on mine) between HIN numbers and model years. Unless there is some top secret decoder.

Maybe it changed in the 80's or maybe it's just coincidence that you have an 83 in your #.

Re: Hull ID date vs model year?

There's been a lot of talk about this in the past. All of my brochures are 60s and 70s and there is no correlation between serial # and year in that time period. I can't say for the 80s and 90s. I do know there have been instances of boats being made in say, 68 and bought in early 69 and the title calls it a 69 when the paint and accessories clearly say it's a 68(they had a new paint scheme every year back then).

My new to me Nassau has a registration and a title that say 1965, but the serial number says 66.

Does it matter, no. And I am not opening that can of worms with the state.

Boat companies I worked for did not run their fiscal year Jan to Dec. They ran July to June. Thus all boats made after their fiscal year change (July) had the hull ID (and new colors, interiors, etc.) for the next calandar year. Is common practice.
