My boat came with a Humminbird 100SX fish finder. I'm not a fisherman but I use it as a depth finder, or so I though. It tells me the water is 400+ ft deep when it know it's between 10ft and 60ft deep. Is that thing broken, junk, or am I doing good something wrong?

I turn it on, it goes to startup, shows the depth, black lines, occasionally some fish, it moves along as I do, and beeps.

Is the transducer parallel to the water or kicked up?

Some times if the sensitivity is turned up too far it gets multiple returns and gives erroneous readouts. Try turning down the sensitivity and see if that solves your problem. BTY, there are operator's manuals online if you need one. Just type in the name and model number. JMHO
