Model: Humminbird Matrix 17

Age: 1.5 years old

Mount: transom before, now shoot through hull

Problem: When finder looses the bottom in shallow water (less than 2 ft) it reads 976ft or similar and never recovers. It must be turned off and back on again to reset the unit.

When my unit was transom mounted on my duck boat it had to be set to the outside because of obstacles so if I took a corner sharp it would catch air and not read. It would not recover so I would have to reset it. I thought that was due to air bubbles lingering around the transducer. Now I have mounted it in the bilge of my flats boat and the same thing happens. If I take the boat shallower than 2 ft the readout flashes and reads crazy numbers. The only way to get it to read correctly is to turn it off and back on again. What a pain! I have tried turning the sensitivity way up (20 of 20), way down (1 of 20), and many points in between and it does the same thing. Any suggestions or has anyone else had this problem?

Re: Humminbird Depth Finder Problems

My experience has been that when in less than 2 feet of water, they will read jumbled numbers. But as soon as I move into deeper water (3' or better), it reads correctly. I have never had to turn it off and on again. I don't know what the problem is with your finder, but I would have it looked at, as I doubt it is the transducer that is the problem...

I would call the manufacturer and tell them your problem. Thay may have seen this behaviour before and will know the exact cause and fix.

I was hoping someone would say "just set the whatever to a lower setting" or something simple like that. You are right. I will probably have to call the mfg. Thanks.
