Humminbird Matrix 97 Question

I've talked the Missus into letting me upgrade my fishfinder to a GPS combo unit. I have around $700 budgeted.

I've considered the Lowrance HDS 5 but I'm a bit leary of Lowrances customer support. I found a Humminbird Matrix 97 combo on Ebay and from other dealers new in box at what seems like a good price. I assume this unit is Old Stock, no longer in production.

Is this a good unit or should I consider other options.

Thanks

Re: Humminbird Matrix 97 Question

While the Matrix 97 still shows on current product on HB website, I suspect it may be being discontinued shortly. Most of the matrix series has already been discontinued. If you are interested in HB, look at the 788 units. They have internal and external gps options. The MSRP is around $700, but have seen them online for $550.

PS: HB will be updating many of the series in January. If you can hold off on purchase in late winter/early spring, you can make sure you get all of the new features. Most will be available as a S/W download, but other like new ContourXD lake maps, will not.

Re: Humminbird Matrix 97 Question

Thank you for the info John. The boat is winterized and I won't be needing a new unit until spring so I have plenty of time to do my homework and find a good deal. I have considered the 788 units.
