Hurricane is approaching and expecting it to pass by. We've had steady hard rain and 40 mph most of the day with gusts to 55 (69 in the bay)

Boat is on a trailer in a parking lot with many others; checked on it during a lull and all the boats are staying put. I hung fenders off mine in case the neighbor comes over...

watching the wind nearby at Willoughby:

I'm in Norfolk, Va, near the Hampton Boulevard bridge, on the Lafayette River. ALready filled the rain guage 6". Power went out 1:45; back on but don't expect it to last.
Tide was in the yard this morning at high. Now, 3 hours before high, it's way up. Initially we were expecting Isabel/2009 Northeaster but looks like it may be higher.
Lots of limbs down but no big trees.

Two people and a cat left Portsmouth last night in a 30' sailboat bound for Annapolis, found the weather to be "no problem" and anchored off Ocean View, woke up on a jetty, on the news and in an ambulance. Darwin candidates, luckily no children; they shouldn't even be allowed to own a cat!

Good luck to all. Tight lines? How about enough line and may it hold!

I've done everything that needs to be done, so now it's just 'hang on and wait' time.
Hope things don't get too nasty at the top of the Bay.

Cookin'- heard the Norfolk area could have a 12' surge.
You might want to tie that boat trailer to something solid!

I heard LI was going to get hit HARD... who knows with this though. It's been a rainy day in NJ and nothing more. It's supposed to get worse soon..

Good luck and God Bless all..
First time people have evacuated TO FLORIDA during a hurricane

I called my Inside Sales guy yesterday that works in our Fair Lawn, NJ office and asked him if he and everybody else was prepared for Irene. His answer??? We are 30 miles inland, not by the water!!!
After a quick Florida veteran of Hurricanes scolding, they all left early Friday to prepare..Lord....

I'm about 20 mins outside fair lawn... everyone is FREAKING OUT here... they have no idea what to do... wal mart was sold out of water... I had to go all over to get three marine batteries for the sump pumps... picked up a cheap generator and 10 gals. of fuel..

Dont forget the beer! Usualy no alchohol sales for a while after hurricanes, and usualy not allowed to leave your house the first week or so! Nothin to do but drink beer and sweat with no ac or power! Trust me , ive ridden out every storm since 1986, got it down to a science! Good luck up there, and try to make the best of it I guess is what im saying...

In middle of it now. Bay is in my yard. Generator humming. Pumps pumping. Road blocked by limbs and wires. 70 kt wind. So far, so good.

The worst of it is just coming onshore now on LI's south shore. Should be pretty much over by around noon. The southern half of the storm has literally fallen apart.

Good news- wind speeds have decreased and we're seeing a high-end tropical storm. Still packs a wallop, tho.

Bad news- high tide at my boat dock is around 10:00 this morning. If this sucker had been travelling faster it would have been through here in the middle of the night. Instead, we've got surge and tide together.

Man, I hope the boat's okay. I'll head own there this afternoon if I can get to it.

Good luck. I am near Babylon on the bay and waitng for the crest in a few hours likeyou. My wind is steady SE 45 with gusts to 67. Backside less rain and W wind should push water back out of the inlet.

I wish I could put the boat in the basement! My sump picked the absolute worst possible night to crap out so I've been running on 2 battery-backed pumps and a shop vac (fortunately we didn't lose power). Been up all night babysitting the sump. Boat is fine in the driveway though :p

Ain't it amazing how pumps always fail........when they're pumping?

More so how they're pumping just fine one minute before you go to bed, then you get a weird feeling & go check on it 15 mins later and find it not pumping and the water rising fast!

Glad I had a boat so I'd have that 2nd marine battery at least! I knew the boat would be critically important to our survival someday :)
