Anyone have any experience with Hustler Aluminum props. They claim that they
perform as a SS prop. Just wondering if it is true.

Re: Hustler Props

I don't think so.

The people making them even makes SS and if their alu was all perfect, why should they?

If you're thinking of a new prop, first figure out what is the worry about the one you have already.

Then figure out how you want to use it.

Any prop is a compromise between prop properties.

Grip, speed, surfacing, lift, economy etc. And even though SS perform better, they really are much more expensive so the value may be better on some alu or composite.

Re: Hustler Props

UU made some good comments...props are all about compromises.

Turning Point, who came out with these props, really has some good technology behind it.
Because of their new technology, their prop prices are usually very good, partly because those who carry them don't have to have as many in stock due to interchangability.

Michigan Wheel, the undeniable leader in props, is even moving their props to the hub and housing system used by Turning Point.

From the information I have seen, a SS prop usually performs better than AL but sometimes the difference is very small. For high performance boats I'd recommend SS. I'd also recommend SS for those people who tend to abuse their props....like when beaching a boat. An aluminum prop just won't survive long in many circumstances.

If you have an aluminum prop then just assume that you don't want to hit anything other than water with it.

- bayman

Re: Hustler Props

I picked one of these up last week for my Mercruiser as a spare/ski prop. My original prop is a MI Wheel 14.25X21. i bought the hustler in a 14.25x19. I am very pleased with it. I won't quote RPM's or anything since the motor isn't winding fully yet (just rebuilt and havn't tweaked her yet). It does seem to hold better in a turn than the MI Wheel on my boat (20' DEEP V), but that may be due to lower pitch. Watch the sizing as I have read that Turning Point gives these props extra cup. From my limited experience, I would say they do as the 19 turns almost identical R's as the 21, but comes out of the hole much faster (possible due to the vents in teh TP). All in all, well worth the $50 for the hub and $70 for the housing at Boaters World. The only complain\t I have with it so far is that while the boat backs well with the MI Wheel, the hustler gust doesn't seem to do as well.

Re: Hustler Props

Much can be said about props.

Some time ago I put up a book to download for free, concerning props and many related topics.

Look here http://www.iboats.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=17;t=015097

By reading this book you'll be able to understand much more about prop selection etc.

It's a kind of large download (8.8 mb), but those who downloaded it so far are very happy about it.

Please note, that his book was made by Quicksilver to whom all rights belong.

UU,
Yep you did and I downloaded and read the whole thing. Great info for the new guy (me) as well as others. I can only imagine how long it took you to scan that in. It is now being passed around at work. I see how people have said that aluminum is not as durable as SS. I understand that but the way I am looking at it is if I was to hit something I would much rather buy a new housing for $70 than take a chance on breaking a shaft or something else expensive. I am very performance oriented but the trade off just don't seem worth the SS prop right now. Remember I am new and probably will do something wrong sooner or later. I bought a 14.25 x 19 hustler for my boat. I will let you know how it does compaired to my OEM 14 x 19 prop. Everybody thanks for responding to the new guy.

Alone the fact that you've studied the facts and considered the aspects makes it more thna likely you'll end up with a satisfactory setup.

At least you'll know about things when they occur.

If you cruise a lot waters with objects that can harm a prop, a composite type with singe replaceable blades might be good. They (too) claim to outperform anything else, but after reading the book you're able to evaluate this for yourself.

Re: Hustler Props

I was reading this thread and wondering if there might be a current link to the book that is reffered in it.

Also I replaced a michigan wheel 14 1/2 x 19 with a hustler from ebay it was supposed to be 19 but turned out to be 17

MW WOT 38 mph
hustler WOT 31 mph

but with the michigan wheel I would drop out of the hole after making 2 turns in a row with the hustler acceleration is much better and it stick to the turns. I'm going to buy another housing next year maybe 19 and 21 to see which one is best and then upgrade to SS. for the main prop and use the others for alternate uses. I would recomend the hustler but the MW aluminum does seem to be stronger.

Re: Hustler Props

I used a hustler prop on a boat I had in the past. It was a lowe bass john with a 50 hp evenrude on it. Performance was no different than the stock aluminum prop I replaced as far as I could tell. I replaced it due to some damage to the old prop and thought it was likely to happen again where I was fishing. The outer housing with the blades was cheaper than a rebuild on the old prop at the local shop.
