I am thinking about buying a bass boat with an older merk 1980s not sure of year . test ran it ,water in hull after run ,owner said the livewell filled when running and drained into the hull ,is this normal ? Or do I have a leak ,and how good are the older Merks .?

Live wells drain via tubing or plastic hose connected to a fitting near the base of the well, and to another fitting near the water line on the hull. Over time, the hose can degrade or disconnect. Water can also come in between the cap and hull bottom seam under the rub rail, or it can leach from saturated flotation foam in the hull, just to name a few causes.

Older Mercs are fine, as are other brands if they have decent compression and have been adequately maintained.
