1981 5.7L 260 Pre-Alpha. I noticed last fall when I lowered my drive after parking for the winter there was oil dripping out of my bilge hole onto the ground. Great, I thought, that's the first thing I'll check into in the spring. Today was the first chance I've had to get the boat out. I put the battery in and raised the drive to tow it home and when I looked in the back it had run about a tablespoon of oil out the bilge hole on the ground again. I stuck my head in every tight spot I could to find the source of the leak and finally resorted to taping a swiveling mirror on a piece of redi-rod and found where the oil is coming from. I can see where the grey hose from the reverse lock and the black hose from the trim pump go out thru the gimbal housing directly below the exhaust port. The oil (10W30) is running out of the hole the hoses go through and down the inside of the transom until it hits the bilge drain and runs out of it onto the ground. My question is.......The trim cylinder lines run to a hydraulic connector on the bottom of the gimbal housing. 2 hoses come out of each side of the hydraulic connector and run to the cylinders. If I take the 2 bolts holding the hydraulic connector to the gimbal housing out and drop it down am I going to find the grey and black hoses with a loose connector inside there causing my leak or are they connected by some sort of compression fitting inside there? It got too dark for me to try tonight, so I want to try it in the morning. I have scoured my OEM manual and my parts catalog and they dont do much but mention the hydraulic connector when telling you to connect the hoses to it. I'd love a little help on this one. Thanks!

Re: Hydraulic connector question.....

Once you disconnect the block form the gimble housing you will be able to pull it down to expose the hose fittings. Hopefully that will reveal your leak. There is also a gasket required on the block mating surface to keep water from intruding into the bildge.

Reel....Have you ever had one of the connectors off and seen inside it as to what kind of fittings are in there? If the gasket gets oil on it will I be able to re-use it? I did see the gasket listed in my parts manual.

Re: Hydraulic connector question.....

The internal fittings are identical to the ones on the outside, flare fittings. Usually the gasket tears up.

I hope its the fittings leaking and not a hose. If it is a hose is it possible to connect a new one to the old and pull the whole works back through without pulling the drive off?? I figured you were going to give me bad news on the gasket. If it doesn't tear up but gets oil soaked could you re-use it??

Re: Hydraulic connector question.....

Sure, you could connect the hoses with a flare coupler. You may be able to clean the oil off the gasket with some brake cleaner and then use some sealer on the gasket and re install it. Naturally I have to say not to reuse any gaskets or seals though. But.........
