what are the pros and cons of a hydraulic jack plate im wanting to put one on my 1994 stratos 285 pro xl it has a 94 175 fast strike im wanting more top end and better take off

It gives you the possibility of fine-adjusting engine installation height on transom while running.
In speeds above 50 knots, that might give some advantage.
Lift the engine, less drag, higher speed.
Never run with lift without having a water pressure gauge installed. You may run the risk of lifting too high.
It is not just to install and run, prop tests, cooling tests etc have to be done as well to obtain the optimum result and maximum engine safety.

It also gives your motor more setback away from the running surface that gives it better bite.

If your boat has a notched transom then it already has setback designed into it.
