hydraulic pump location too wet?

My Simrad RPU160 hydraulic steering pump died. When I inspected it, I see that the shaft just won't turn at all and looks rusty. So I assume that it was installed in a location that is too wet. Before just installing a replacement, I am hoping for some guidance on where/how this pump should be installed.

The installation manual (for example http://www.busse-yachtshop.de/pdf/Si...0%20manual.pdf ) is not very specific. It just says "it should not be mounted in a wet area".

The original pump was installed about 1 foot above the waterline, and about one foot forward of the transom, so for sure it never gets submerged. And the entire area is covered so it doesn't get rained on. But it could get the occasional splash, and for sure there is constant humidity/moisture.

That sure sounds like a "wet area" to me.

Should I build some kind of waterproof box around the pump? Or should I completely redo the installation and mount the pump inside in a truly dry location? Advice/suggestions/guidance welcome.

thanks

Ayuh,..... Welcome Aboard,..... Yer engine room should be dry enough for that pump,.....

Is yer hull leakin',..??

Is the bilge pump workin',..??

Do ya boat in saltwater,..??

Sprayin' things like that pump, 'n other electrical connections with something like Fluid Film goes along ways in stoppin' or slowin' corrosion, 'n rust,.....
