hydraulic steering fluid

My hydraulic, Sea Star, steering seemed to have too much play. Opened the cap on the helm and noticed it was real low in fluid. Downloaded the bleeding instructions on the Teleflex site and the fluid they say to use. I can't find anything locally that matches. What does everyone use in their steering systems and will something carried at a local auto store work? Thanks T

Re: hydraulic steering fluid

I use Shell Donax TX Automatic transmission fluid which is also suitable for power steering pumps. This was what was sold by the Volvo Penta main dealer. My manual says use DuraPlus Power tilt and trim fluid but I couldnt find it.

Hope this helps
Chris

I was able to find the Teleflex fluid at my local marine place. 13 bucks a quart!

You may need to buy online if you use their stuff. I found some here or here .

The Teleflex site says Dextron 2 trans fluid could be used in a pinch. They don't say whether to purge the system when their fluid is obtained or what. I found a old reply that said he has used Dextron for 8 years.

The Dextron will work but it may become stiffer (harder to turn) especially in cold weather. It may not be noticable in some cases. The correct fluid is MIL-H-5606 aircraft hydraulic fluid.

Re: hydraulic steering fluid

Thanks, that is what I needed to know. I did some research on Google and found a Boston Whaler site talking about Sea Star Steering. They explained how to change the seal and talked about the filler cap being vented. Older units like mine are not vented causing fluid to expand in the heat and leak out the seal. I e mailed Teleflex trying to get an answer on whether older units should change to a vented cap. I'll post what I fine out. T

Re: hydraulic steering fluid

Received an e mail from Teleflex. They stated that my system is a Sea Star Pro and does not require a vented plug. I bled the system and was able to get out a couple of air bubbles. There is about 1/2 inch of play at the steering wheel. I can live with that. T
