I have heard that you can substitute automatic transmission fluid for hydraulic steering fluid on outboard steering systems. Anyone have any experiance with this?<br />Thanks

Re: Hydraulic steering fluid

The manufacturers tell you to use only hydraulic steering fluid except in an emergency. They claim that use of ATF will make it harder to steer. I use ATF and have no problems but it is a bit tight.

No, you should only use Sea-Star fluid (assuming that's the system you have)! However, if I was floating away on an iceberg and "had" to use something... I'd use whatever was available, but only untill I could later drain and refill with the right stuff!!
