HYDRAULIC STEERING

I have a Teleflex SeaStar hydraulic steering unit for my twin Merc 225s. The steering seems OK, no softness or stiffness when turning etc.My question is how do I know when I need more fluid. I open the dashboard mount and see no fluid. Is there another way of checking?

Fluid level should be right up to the threads on that filler plug. Wouldnt be a bad idea to pick up a bleeding kit and bleed a couple of quarts through it being that ya dont see any fluid. Also check out hoses, fittings and seals for a leak. Chances are the leak isnt goona be to obvoious.
