I just purchased 88 23' proline with hynautic steering, (which consist of helm pump, reservoir w/vavle and cylinder attached to twin 110 outboards). I would like to do away with the reservoir w/valve by replacing the helm pump with a Sea Star helm pump H5271. Does anyone know if this will work??? Thanks

Given the application you describe, I would assume it will be OK. However, it is dangerous to assume. What model Hynautic cylinder do you have? Which Reservalve model? What kind of hose/tubing is it plumbed with?

If you happen to have a RV-50 series reservalve plumbed with 5/16" nylon tubing, it is a 500psi system and the H5271 (1000 psi) would be a dangerous situation unless you install high-pressure hoses.

Also if you happen to have an unbalanced cylinder, (rod only comes out one end), it requires a helm designed to work with it. I don't know if the H5271 meets that qualification or not. It doesn't matter though if you don't have an unbalanced cylinder.

It's nice that you want to stimulate the ecomomy with a $400 purchase, but I wonder why you want to do it anyway? The pressurized system is better. Just my not-so-humble opinion as a Hynautic retiree.

Re: Hydraulic Steering

Thanks for the information, and believe me I don't have an extra 400.00 laying around. I already have the pump and would like to use the area that the reservoir sits to build in a tackle storage, not to talk about the pain to put oil in it and pressurize it. Once again Thanks
