Mariner around 1983 - 85....external pump in boat..manual says to use a brand name 10w-30 or a 10w-40 automotive oil...the oil in mine looks more like power steering fluid or auto trans fluid red in colour like wine....what do i use? as the manual has confused me.

thanxs

Since you have a remote mounted pump,10-30,10-40, or 30W are all acceptable oils for your TNT unit. Someone put the wrong fluid in. It likely won't hurt anyting, but eventually could cause leaks.
TNT Units mounted between the transom brackets with integral pumps use Dextron/Mercon ATF.

Todd

Re: Hydraulic tilt trim fluid

If yours is already red somebody else probably already used transmission fluid. Does it smell like transmission fluid? If that's what is already in there, then you should continue using it. Mixing ATF and oil probably wouldn't be very good.
