Found out today my boat has hydro lock, seems the flappers wore out and allowed water to enter the engine,,,,Volvo penta 4.3
Going n reverse she died on me, then I tried to crack it again and the engine turned over once or twice, then nothing. Like most I thought it was a starter issue......were not sure if there is internal damage yet,,,,,

How long has it been like this? Salt or unsalted water? Have you removed the spark plugs and spun the engine with the starter to get the water out?

Let us know some more details and how we can help with advice.

You want to get the water out, some oil into the cylinders, then do a compression test to see what you get. Sometimes a hydrolock can result in some dent connecting rods . . . sometimes not.

Pull the plugs and turn it over.
WD in the holes and turn over some more.
Then try to start it.
DON"T let it set with water in there, fresh or salt water.

Like previous posted said get the water out ASAP. What year? I forget exactly what years but I know volvo has a tech bulletin and disco tired use of flapper in some boats so it's possible lack of flapper is not your root cause. I have a 1999 5.0GL and it is applicable to mine .

My 2000 5.7 GSI's Had a service bulletin that change the risers from 4" (I think) to 11" so that rapid slow downs or reverse wouldn't allow water entry
