Hi,

I have a 70's 50hp Johnson hydro electric that will not go into gear. The motor starts and runs fine. I noticed through another post that the green and blue wires shift the motor into gear. I tested the green wire and it is always live no matter what position the shifter is in. The blue wire is never live (I tested this without the motor running and the key on).

Could the problem be with the shifter or something else?

Thanks,

Re: Hydroelectric will not go into gear

Hi Fuser

If I remember corectly the green wire is the live feed to the neutral solenoid and the blue is reverse.
If the green wire is always live then you will always be in neutral.
Your gear select should be:
Forward- 0 volts on both wires
Neutral- 12 volts Green 0 volts Blue
Reverse- 12 volts Blue 0 volts Green.
I would start by checking the outputs from the shifter and working back to the motor, making sure that all conections are good and clean.

Best of luck

To correct the previous post:

Reverse requires 12 volts on both the green AND the blue wires.

Re: Hydroelectric will not go into gear

Thanks, I found the problem. The lever switch in the controls was broken. The part is $150 (Canadian). I read in another post that this can be hooked up with a three way switch. I am a little conserend about the saftey aspect of this method. I might try and find a used set of controls first.

Any websites that offer used parts?

Thanks,

Fuser

Re: Hydroelectric will not go into gear

I bought a NOS set of those controls on ebay this winter from a guy in Canada. I also bought another used set on ebay last summer. The switches/controls do come up now and then.
