I have a Volvo Penta I/O 350 and it has been suggested to me via another post to add a hydrofoil for better stability in light chop. Looking for some additional input here. I've looked at them on the web, but cannot find any technical literature either supporting or not supporting their use. Looking for some experienced opinions here. I'm not looking to get out of the hole quicker, simply for better handling.

Thanks

Re: Hydrofoil Pros & Cons

Well, I added one to my Volvo 302 after having problems with 'porpoising'. They really do help stabilize the boat in chop and you can cruise around on plane much slower than usual (for tubing, etc). If you trim all the way down, plowing through waves is a no-brainer.

The negatives I've found are a lower top speed, about 5mph or so. When I first took my boat out, I hit about 50mph, but with it on and the same prop pitch I can only muster about 43 or so. Also, if you do pull tubers, skiers etc watch out as the thing really sticks out and is quite sharp! Even with the outdrive turned all the way to the right (away from the ladder) I was still very nervous about people getting cut.

I added one to my 21' with a 4.3l merc and it got out of the hole in about twice as fast, and i can stay on plane at a much slower speed. I don't have the ladder problem, but as chris said you will probably lose 2-5 mph top end.

Re: Hydrofoil Pros & Cons

I added a "happy troller" brand combo trolling plate and hydrofoil. This lets my 350 Merc. troll at slower speeds when in the down position, and has a very large surface area in the up position, which really does help with stability and planing. The downside is the large metal blade area that you do have to be aware of if you're using the boarding ladder.
